I'm a trader I buy and sell financial contracts. Say there's for example a company that I think the price of their shares is going to rise, then I might well go long on their shares which means I will buy a number of their shares and hold those shares hoping the price goes up.

Going short is the opposite of going long and is where I might sell some shares I don't have because I think that the price of those shares is likely to go down. You can hedge, which means that you can agree to buy some shares at a fixed price at some date in the future.
