Kdy se potřebujeme ptát na cestu? Perhaps I am visiting a new city or a new building, and I don’t know my way around … maybe I’m lost.

Když se potřebujete dostat na nějaké konkrétní místo, zeptáte se: Is there a supermarket near here, please? Where’s the nearest supermarket please? Can you tell me where the nearest supermarket is please? Do you know if there’s a supermarket near here please?

Když chcete převést jednoduchou otázku na větu oznamovací - stejně jako v češtině - změníte pořádek slov: Is there a bank near here? There is a bank near here.

Ovšem v souvětích, v takzvaných nepřímých otázkách, které začínají zájmenem WHERE, si musíte dát na pořádek slov pozor, tentokrát je jiný než v češtině: Can you tell me where the nearest bank is please?

Emma Sorry to bother you. Can you tell me where the nearest post office is, please?
Hugh Yes sure … er … yeah! You turn … turn right here …take the first left …and then go straight on for about 500 metres, and it’s on the left.

Emma se slušně obrátí na kolemjdoucího a snaží se upoutat jeho pozornost: Excuse me! ‘scuse me! Potom se mu omlouvá, že ho zdržuje: Sorry to bother you. Angličané jsou velice zdvořilí a při každé příležitosti se omlouvají.

Potřebujete-li popisat cestu, stačí vám většinou několik základních pokynů: straight ahead, go straight ahead, straight on, turn left, turn right, take the first on the left (zahněte první ulicí doleva), take the second on the right.

Cestu vysvětlujete kupříkladu when a tourist is looking for a museum; perhaps a friend is visiting you at home for the first time a postačí vám k tomu základní instrukce, jako: take the first on the left.

Ovšem mějte na paměti, že je třeba vysvětlovat co nejjasnněji. Stačí prostý imperativ - což je vlastně základní infinitivní tvar slovesa bez to: go straight ahead … turn left … walk down this road … keep walking till you see the park.

Pokyny by měly být jasné a přesné, věty jednoduché. It’s usually NOT a good idea to use street names when giving directions – especially to tourists. Because some street names are hard to pronounce (v angličtině známý příklad: Leicester Square se vyslovuje: “Lestr”).

Vedle základních pokynů, občas potřebujete obraty, které se vám mohou hodit ve složitějších situacích:

Go straight on down this road.. turn right at some traffic lights.. walk to the roundabout… keep walking till you see the park.

Pokud je cesta složitější, pro lepší názornost je dobré zahrnout do svých instrukcí konkrétní orientační body, jako třeba: jděte pořád rovně, až dojdete k parku: Go straight on till you reach the park. Turn right at the church. The cinema is opposite the bus station. The bank is next to the Grand Hotel.

Orientační body jsou snadno zapamatovatelné a ujistí člověka, že jde správně. Pokud by vysvětlování mělo být příliš komplikované, stojí za to se zeptat: Have you got a map? I’ll show you on a map.
