Lekce 22

The language you need when you want to give simple instructions - how to use a coffee machine.

Instrukce jsou pro větší srozumitelnost obvykle rozděleny do několika kroků. A tyto jednotlivé kroky uvádíme následujícími obraty: first of all (nejdříve), then, after that, when you've finished (po ukončení, když káva doteče.)

First of all, choose what you want - tea, for example. Then press this button. Then put in some money. (Vhoďte mince) Then wait for the light.

Hugh Er … sorry, how do I get a cup of coffee? I can’t work this out.
Emma Oh, sure! It’s a bit complicated ! Hold on. Look, first of all, switch it on here.
Hugh Yeah.
Emma OK, Choose what coffee you want - there’s about four different choices. Er that one’s quite nice. So, press this button, if that’s the one you want …
Hugh mmmm
Emma Put your money in. And then, wait for the green light. Er, after that, the cup’ll drop down, and the coffee should pour. And when you’ve finished …
Hugh mmm?
Emma … just press that button, and it puts it back onto standby.
Hugh Oh great!

Hugh neví, jak automat funguje: I can't work this out – I can't understand how it works.

Lekce 23

Prodejní automat občas nefunguje, a někdy nám nezbývá, než na příslušném místě požádat o pomoc.

Hodíte své poslední peníze do automatu na kafe a nic se neděje, co řeknete?

Er … Excuse me! The coffee machine doesn’t work. The coffee machine isn’t working properly. I put my money in, but the coffee didn’t come out. I think there’s something wrong with the coffee machine. I put my money in …but nothing came out. My money has got stuck I can’t get my money back.

Hugh je na nádraží a kupuje si u automatu jízdenku. Vhodil do automatu peníze, ovšem žádný lístek se neobjevil:

Hugh Sorry, can you help me? I think the ticket machine isn’t working properly.
Emma Oh I’m sorry to hear that, sir. It keeps going wrong, I’m afraid.
Hugh I put the money in and I didn’t get a ticket and I can’t get my money back.
Emma Look, if I give you this form to fill in …
Hugh Yeah, no ... sorry … just to stop you before you go any further … I mean, the money’s stuck, I need the ticket, my train’s coming in a minute. I don’t need a form, I need a ticket.
Emma Yeah. I appreciate that, sir, but the system is that I’m afraid for the moment you’ll have to buy another ticket … er … because if the money is stuck in the machine, I can’t physically get it out. I don’t have keys to access the machine. And that happens later in the day
.

Lekce 24

You have problems with a ticket machine at the train station. Lístek nevypadl a peníze zůstaly v automatu. Vy chcete své peníze samozřejmě zpátky: I’d like a refund, please. Can I have my money back?

Pokud osoba, s kterou hovoříte, vám nemůže a nebo není ochotna pomoci, můžete si vyžádat někoho jiného anebo přímo vedoucího: Is there someone else I can speak to? Can I speak to the manager please?

Hugh The money’s stuck, I need the ticket, my train’s coming in a minute.
And that happens later in the day.
Hugh Fine… fine … yeah, I understand that … but can I have my money back … now?
Emma You, unfortunately, can’t have your money back this minute …
Hugh … but I don’t have enough money to buy another ticket, and I need to get on the train. The only money I have is now stuck in that machine …
Emma Er …
Hugh … and I need to buy another ticket, and a form really isn’t much use to me. Look, I know, I know this isn’t your fault, but … is there someone else I can speak to, please? I’d like to speak to the manager, please.
Emma Very well, sir. I’ll call him. If you just wait there.
