About our writer - Stuart Atkinson
Stuart in the Highlands.
Stuart in the Highlands under clouds that would make any astronomer cry into his star chart.

Stuart Atkinson is probably Cumbria's most well-known astronomer.

He enjoys sharing his passion for skywatching with others. Careful - he'll get you hooked too!

Stuart Atkinson is the author of six children's astronomy books - with more to be published this year.

Local schools in West Cumbria make use of his knowledge - he is a regular visitor giving talks about astronomy and space (accompanied by a strange collection of props - his faithful collection of meteorites and "string" solar system!).

Stuart in the studio.
Stuart Atkinson is a regular on BBC Radio Cumbria.

He is also the Secretary of Cockermouth Astronomical Society, which he founded ten years ago.

(Rumour has it that before CAS started, no-one from Cockermouth had even looked at the night sky since the days of Cockermouth's previous astronomer - the Reverend Fearon Fallows, who founded the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope in 1830.)

Stuart is a regular on BBC Radio Cumbria's Friday evening show. His astronomy knowledge is tested by the phone-in callers and the show often features a topical astronomy discussion.

During the day, Stuart slaves away at Lilliput Lane's Workington factory. In what little remains of his spare time, he tells us he enjoys listening to CDs by angst-ridden female singer songwriters and telling people to "STOP TALKING!!" in the Plaza cinema.
