Sneezewort
David tells us this is 'sneezewort' (Achillea ptarmica), an old cure for sneezing - maybe you have to put it up your nose??

Qualifications: BSC Hons Environmental Studies

Career: David worked freelance for Cumbria Wildlife Trust and English Nature. He then went on to be a Lecturer in Ecology at the University of Central Lancashire (Newton Rigg) and then travelled around various local schools as a freelance lecturer.

David began working part-time at Talkin Tarn and progressed to full-time. He has now been working there for 4 years.


Dr Paul Williams

Orginates from:
Hitchin, Hertfordshire

Living now:
Wylam, Tyne Valley

Job Title:
Staff Tutor in Earth Science

Qualifications: BSC Joint Hons Geology and Chemistry
PHD Organic Chemistry

Rolling hills
Paul tells us that these rolling hills that surround the tarn, were formed in the ice age

Career: Paul began his career as a post doctoral researcher in chemistry. He then became a organic geo chemist researcher for Newcastle University. Following that, he worked in the oil industry as a geochemical consultant.

Paul then began lecturing in geochemistry and now teaches earth science for the Open University.
