Title: Nordic walking

Phil has taken up a new form of exercise that often results in many bemused stares!

Phil has a busy life! He and his wife run a B&B in Keswick and during the day he works in a local outdoors shop. He also has two children and so has little spare time.

My wife & I are ex-pats from Bolton, Lancashire living in Denmark and are members of a Nordic walking club here in North Denmark. Tonight we saw your article on Nordic walking and as was quite rightly pointed out, it is a fantastic way to exercise. We walk in the beautiful, relaxing forests in and around Aalborg, our home city. Every year we raise money for La Vida a charity that cares for children with life threatening diseases. Many members also take advantage of the annual club organised 'walking tour' to Majorca. We would love to link up with a club in the UK for joint activities and anything else either club would consider useful.

Yes, I had never seen nordic walking in Massachusetts, but tried it today, walking around the neck in Marblehead, MA. I felt kind of sill, but I also felt great because for the first time in ages, my knees were not killing me and there seemed to be less strain on my back...this will be one of my new ways to maintain fitness...I haven't gotten my heart pumping like that walking on the treadmill, ever!

This is a perfectly normal form of excercise where we live, in Austria - and not just in the mountains, in the city also. All kinds of people do it, though chiefly the over-40s who perhaps feel unable to do the more severe forms of excercise. Britian must be behind the times in this one!

I do this along the front in Mumbles (Swansea) and feel a bit of a fool, but I'm encouraged now to know I am not alone! Good video! Isobel Williams

Good video, hope it gets more people trying nordic walking. UK's first nordic walking event takes place in the Lakes in June, check out www.garburn.co.uk for more details. Hope to see you there Phil ! graham patten
