Rheged was opened in August 2000 by Lord Melvyn Bragg of Wigton and in April 2003, welcomed its millionth visitor.

The cinema screen at Rheged is the size of six double decker buses.

Rheged has disabled access to all levels of the building and shopmobility trolleys are bookable in advance.

· The Everest 'The Top of the World' Exhibition is the only exhibition of its kind anywhere in the world.

Rheged is an £18 million development designed to minimise the impact
on the landscape and be environmentally friendly in operation.

77% of the funding for Rheged came from Westmorland Motorway Services. The remainder of the funding was from the European Regional Development Fund, English Partnerships, the North West Development Agency and Cumbria
