My wife and I spentthirty five happy years, first in Kendal and later in Bowness. We now live in the east Midlands but I still have a great nostalgia about the Lakes and I enjoy brousing your excellent website. However, may I suggest that an occasional comment about the southern Lakes i.e. Kenda/ Bowness and surrounding district would not unduly offend the northern Lakes dwellers. Thanks for allowing me to voice these well meant observations

Has anyone seen the new road signage on the old section of dual carriageway on the westbound side of the A66 at Bass Lake? It must have cost a fortune to tell everyone there is a bend 'at each bend', ludicrous waste of my, sorry, taxpayers money.

quite simply - if you think you are "hard done too" - then try and drive around kendal.

I travel into carlisle every day for work I then travel arround the cumbria area with my work, the roads in the carlisle area are the worst i have traveled on for some years i purchased a new car 6 months ago and iam having to take it into the garage as i feel that the pot holes have damaged the suspention and steering as it is now pulling to the left,
every b***** road in carlisle has a pot hole just in line with the wheels of the humble driver who actually pays for the pleasure. this must be wrong!!!

There are more problems all across England.I used to live the other side of the country in a more populated place than the village I now live in.It wasnt so bad there so why here in the country?

Road from Arnside to Sandside...talk about potholes, more like craters! (Especially from Carr Bank to the bridge). So bad vehicles are swerving to avoid the holes & it's only a matter of time before there's a serious accident. Bad enough for cars, but for motorbikes and cycles it's a nightmare! When is something going to be done (CCC)?!

Welcome to Keswick – NOT!
I and my family have been regular visitors to the Keswick area for nearly 30 years. However, we will now be visiting areas other than Keswick in the future due to a recent incident which resulted in my receiving a parking notice for parking two inches over the white line – in an empty car park on a cold Winters afternoon!!!
I will pay the fixed penalty notice (reluctantly) but have decided that this ridiculous situation should be brought to the attention of:
- Other visitors to Keswick – beware the car parking attendants!
- Local businesses in Keswick – are you aware you are losing business?
(See the Allerdale Council web site forum)
- Allerdale Council – do the receipts from car parking cover the costs of the Parking Services Department?
I received the Parking Notice in the Lakeside Car Park on the afternoon of Friday 14th January. I had paid for a ticket and was amazed to see the penalty notice on my windscreen on returning to my car. The car park must be capable of taking 500 cars but there were about 15 cars parked there that cold afternoon.
To receive a penalty notice for not parking exactly between the white lines is absolutely crazy. When I raised an objection with the Parking Services Department I was met with the typical bureaucratic response of “rules are rules and must be obeyed”. This, together with the almost military style of the car parking attendants’ uniforms is not what I would call welcoming!!
Maybe in the summer the number of visitors is such that this problem can be ignored. I would have thought that Keswick would try harder to attract visitors in the winter months and that this problem needs to be addressed.
Meanwhile – we will be going to Wales or Yorkshire where hopefully we will receive a warmer welcome.

PLACE:Gem town Cockermouth.
ROAD:Rubbybanks Road alongside the river Cocker.
A road/track/footpath that is probably a thousand years old. Probably walked by Wordsworth and definitely written about by R.L.Stevenson.
Present day is in continual use by pedestrians and vehicles as well as being part of the C2C route and only low level route to Harris Park.
CONDITION: Part is surfaced with new river wall etc and is attractive and safe but the rest is a furrowed,litter-ridden, potholed, undrained, canine deposited, muddy disgrace.
Tourists are appalled at the quagmire they have to walk through-----residents have appealed for help for decades and all they have received are empty promises.

I live in Temple Sowerby,I live on a motorway and every day is dangerous for me.We lately had a protest about a bypass that has been promised for OVER 40 YEARS!!!
(congradulations on the Temple Sowerby Bypass Protest for maneging to secure the bypass for us)

what about the huge potholes in the roads around Coniston?

The simple truth is that we all believe we have the right to drive wherever we want, whenever we want. No road system in the world is going to cope with that - no matter how hard people try to improve them (and of course improvements slow things down while they're underway.
We've made this bed - now we're going to have to lie in it.
The obvious solution would be for us all to modify our habits - but there's no chance that will happen - is there?

You complain about the traffic holdups in Carlisle due to road works. The highways people have managed to cause the same sort of jams in Workington's Washington Street without any roadworks.

why is the A66 duel carriageway at Bassenthwaite lake still closed to one lane .nothing seems to be getting done
Alun Oddie
The worst road in Cumbria must be the A590. It seems to be constantly being dug up between Barrow and Swarthmore. At least once a month. As it is the only major road in and out of Barrow, during the day when they are didding the road up, this causes huge tailbacks. And when you get to the roadworks, no one is ever working!

road works on salthouse rd barrow causing 1 mile tailback, why does it take 3 men to watch and one to dig?.
why do they need to reduce the road to one lane . this must be bad planing, shurely.

I have one simple message, please remember that there's life beyond Carlisle. I don't think our town are too bad, the biggest problem I find in Cumbria is getting from one town to the next. The Furness area would be so much more prosperous if people could just get here in a day's travelling!
Liz
In your piece about public transport, you say that the rural buses will stop 'any where it is safe to do so'. My daughter used a bus, asked to be put off at the end of our lane where she and her sisters have been picked up every school day for over twenty years. The driver refused and dropped her off 1 mile further down the road, resulting in my daughter having a 1 1/2 mile work home beside a main road as it was getting dark. Evidently what is safe for a school bus is not safe for a service bus!!
David
I used to enjoy driving , however I find it easier using the cycle when I can. the roads are fine after 8pm and before 6am ..but the healthier option is the norm for me now.. the car spends its days on the drive used only for shopping and day trips..

After Friday's meeting for better traffic management I can't believe i have seen a large Carlisle Works vehicle cleaning Scotland Rd between 7.40a.m-8.15a.m on tuesday the 23/11/04 with loads of traffic moving slower than normal.SG

At the moment the roads from hell are really annoying us in more ways than one. Every week the water's shut off on our road as well as the road is closed. The bins hadn't been emptied this week, all due to the water works. I'm sick and tired of all the brown water we have to run every night after a shut-off!
