The chemistry of smelling

FACTS

The nose is the only external part of the respiratory system.

Air breathed in through the nostrils is channelled by the nasal septum past the olfactory sensors.

These sensors are found at the top of the nostrils and give us our sense of smell when air passes over them.

The nasal membranes are covered in a sticky mucous that moisten the air as it passes over them.

Scientists have long known that smell is one of the most important senses we have. By combining our sense of smell with colour and an ingenious new piece of code for web browsers - they hope to have found a way of transmitting smells across the internet.

Why here?
You might be asking why is this been tried here on BBC Cumbria? The answer is that the technology was developed here in the Lake District by the Windermere new media design company, First Fish. The BBC trials experimental technology across a range of internet browsers and we'd like feedback from you.

Instructions

Click on one of the coloured squares below. This will launch a new window.

Place your thumb on the coloured square within the new window. Look at the screen and concentrate on the colour for ten seconds.

Put your thumb to your nose and inhale.

You should smell something - if you're not sure what it was, highlight the box beneath the coloured square to see what it was.

Then let us know the results of the experiment, and your thoughts on how successful it was - or not!
