The
opening night of the Canteen on Mitchelson Road could have had a
better start. Halfway through the Submarine Heritage Centre's Terry
Spurling's talk on the submarine Perseues' fate, the fire alarm
went off. And in the fashion of all fire alarms I've ever been through,
no-one took any notice until the bouncers started shouting for everyone
to leave. By the time we came in again, it emerged that someone
in the band had smoked backstage! In the non-smoking venue that
is the Canteen! How very rock and roll!

After
Terry Spurling's talk, British Sea Power took to the stage with
a B-sides set. For the hardcore fans who had travelled from near
and far, this was a real treat. For the rest of the audience it
was a nice treat to the band's unknown tunes.
One favourite was the Fakir, the Czech inspired tune full of opportunities
for everyone to shout along. Following the "know your BSP B-sides"-set
was the local Murray & The Skankers with their super funky ska
set fully loaded with horns galore.
Once
the main set was underway, the venue was filled with an enthusiastic
crowd ready to rock the house. A large proportion of the audience
sang along and moshed their hearts out, so much so that the barriers
broke down, leaving only pits and pieces of the metal barrier at
the evening.
For
a first night at the Canteen, it was a really good one. The music
was good and the crowd was enjoying themselves. With enough room
for people to dance, it seems like a great sing of what more to
come in Barrow. Some of the more hardcore BSP fans said it was a
night to remember - by giving the audience a chance to sample the
rarer tracks in British Sea Power's repertoire.
On
that note by the way, for one audience member it was truly memorable
for this performance was the 100th BSP fan Kevo went to and he was
celebrated both on stage by the band and off stage by the BSP following.
That's the kind of following British Sea Power has.
