Barrow Dock Museum - Waymarkers
Ramp up to the Dock Museum entrance.
The Sea Waymarker near the entrance to the museum.

Most people won’t notice these unassuming little sculptures - as they don’t exactly scream out for your attention.

And there’s no label on them to explain their puzzling appearance.

Lindal and Marton Community Website
There are very close links between Barrow and the Lindal and Marton area, as shipbuilding came into existence in Barrow largely as a result of the availability of iron ore that was mined out of Lindal and Marton. Find out more on this community website.

FACTS

The artist, Mary Bourne, carved the sculptures over four weeks in 1996.

The sandstone blocks were salvaged from the graving dock when work was being carried out on the gate.

The designs have minimal fine-line detail as eventually the sandstone will erode.

The final designs were carved with a traditional hammer and chisel.

The ‘Enlightenment Rocks’ were erected to mark the pathway to the museum and also reflect Barrow’s culture.

The buildings represented were chosen for their importance to Barrow in the pre- and post-industrial eras.
