The old Church was probably built on the site of a 7th Century monastery, and is only used for services three times a year.

The church was appropriated by Calder Abbey in 1160.
When the Dissolution of the Monasteries occured during the reign of Henry VIII, the church was given over to the Le Fleming family; Who had been benefactors of Calder Abbey since the 12th Century.
