Holocaust Memorial Day

Cumbria County Council marks Holocaust Memorial Day with a recreation of one of the most potent symbols of the horrors of the concentration camps.

Steve Park of Cumbria County Council looks on at the Holocaust Memorial in Carlisle

The council has teamed up with local branches of the GMB and Unison trade unions to build a pile of shoes - just like those belonging to the victims of genocide found in camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau at the end of the Second World War.

In keeping with the 'stand up to hatred' theme of this year's Holocaust Memorial Day, each shoe will represent a victim of hate - reflecting the genocides not just of World War Two, but also more recent human tragedies such as Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The moving tribute is displayed in the Old Court Room at the Courts in Carlisle on January 27 along with images of the Holocaust. A short commemorative ceremony will be performed and there will also be several showings of the Holocaust Memorial Day film 'The Hate Game'. People are welcome to attend and pay their respects during the day.

Deborah Hamilton, Cumbria county UNISON branch secretary, said: "We welcome this opportunity to mark this day to show man's inhumanity to man."
