Bob Baldwin, who's looked after the stretch of road for nearly 30 years, talks about the fate of those who ignored them at their peril.

Bob Balwin from the Highways Agency describes what happened when the snowgates closed and the huge effort from 11 snowploughs to clear the transpennine route. ![]() The threat of snow drifts and accidents needs be great for the police and Highways Agency to make the decision to shut the gates between Brough and Bowes, closing a road that carries 19 000 vehicles each day.
