Digital Lives is a portal for all the community based projects that BBC Cumbria has been involved with, these include Video Nation, Telling Lives, Inside Lives, The BBC Bus and it's local story gathering efforts and the work of the community journalists based in and around Cumbria The Digital Lives portal on the BBC Cumbria website allows easy access to all of this content and gives people the chance to discuss the issues that affect their daily lives by taking part in discussions on safe, moderated message-boards, where topics as diverse as fishing and film-making can all be discussed. There was just one other winner from the BBC in the Webby Awards. Previously the BBC Cumbria website has been a winner of the Andrew Cross Award for the religious and faith sections of the website. The now in its 10th year, the Webby Awards is the leading international award honouring excellence in web design, creativity, usability and functionality. Established in 1996 during the web's infancy, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 500-member body of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities. The Academy is an intellectually diverse organization that includes members such as musicians Beck and David Bowie, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, political columnist Arianna Huffington, Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, "Smart Mobs" author Howard Rheingold, Oracle chairman Larry Ellison, and The Body Shop president Anita Roddick. Last year (2005), the 9th Annual Webby Awards received over 5,500 entries from over 40 countries and generated some 100 million media impressions. |
