History featuresYou are in: Cumbria > History > History features > Sizergh Castle ![]() Sizergh Castle Sizergh CastleThe medieval castle at Sizergh near Kendal features spring flower meadows and a very large rock garden. Originally built in the Middle Ages by the Strickland family, who still live there, it was extended in Elizabethan times. It's managed by the National Trust, and its gardens, even in early Spring, are nothing short of breathtaking. The high point for visitors is the so-called Rock Garden, excavated and constructed by Hayes of Ambleside in the 1920's. The same company now runs one of the biggest Garden Centres in the area! The rocks are actually limestone from the 1600 acre Sizergh Estate and were removed well before any legislation was brought in to protect limestone pavements! Early Spring also brings the daffodils, not the blowsy, showy types seen in many gardens, but the little wild ones favoured by the bard of the lakes, William Wordsworth. last updated: 20/05/2008 at 14:27 SEE ALSOYou are in: Cumbria > History > History features > Sizergh Castle |
