Facts

From Badger Face Welsh Mountain to Zwartbles. The National Sheep Association list 85 different British sheep breeds.

In 2002 there were 1,801,789 sheep in Cumbria and only 488,513 people. That's over 3 sheep per person.

The word 'Herdwick' is said to mean the pasture where the sheep are kept, seemingly derived from the old Norse 'Herd-vic' (a sheep farm).

Little Bo Peep lost hers, black sheep are ignored and no woman wants to be referred to as "mutton".

In a county where there are more sheep than people, keeping an eye on them is a time consuming job.

Maurice Bowman, George Hogarth and Les Armstrong are all farmers in the Eden Valley in Cumbria. Between them they have hundreds of sheep to care for and count.

Traditionally shepherds have used dialect words to count their sheep. The farmers discuss counting sheep and reveal an amazing ability to count. Listen to them as they reveal how it's done!
