Voices: Galoshes

Trainers, pumps, galoshes ... footwear for exercising in. Did you use string to tie them or did you have slip ons?

Facts

Galoshes definitions:

A rubber boot

A waterproof overshoe that protects shoes from water or snow

The Romans adapted their boots from the Gauls and only wore them in bad weather. Gaulish boots became known as galoshes (Sunshine & Tiegreen, 1995).

February 4, 1824 in History: J W Goodrich introduces rubber galoshes to public

Trainers, pumps, galoshes ... footwear for exercising in.

Did you use string to tie them or did you have slip ons? Did you take them to school in a bag your mother made? Were they black or white? What did you wear them for?

Ann White is a member of the Salterbeck Residents Association and lives on the Salterbeck Estate in Workington, West Cumbria.

Listen to how Ann uses Latin, the language of the Romans, to explain about her PE shoes.

Send in your own stories and words for your trainers/pumps/galoshes using the form below.
