Military low flying times in the north

Depending on weather conditions, The RAF will be conducting low flying exercises in the North of Cumbria during the next few months.

Operational Low Flying Training in the Scotland/northern England Tactical Training Area (TTA) (LFA20T) for January/February 2007

Low flying facts

Jet exercises carried out over the Lake District are referred to as taking place in Fly Area 17 (LFA17). Area 17 is takes in 4,357 miles of airspace and includes Cumbria, parts of North Yorkshire and parts of North Lancashire.

3,887 hours of low flying were recorded in area LFA 17 in the training year 2004-2005.  2,676 hours were by fixed wing aircraft, the rest (,1212 hours) were recorded by helicopters.

The RAF has announced that the routine low flying training programme (with fixed wing aircraft flying down as low as 250 feet over much of the UK) will continue, weather permitting, each weekday throughout December and January.

In addition a small amount of Operational Low Flying Training down to 100 feet is planned to take place in the Scotland/northern England TTA north of A69 and west of A68 on the dates and times listed below.  The times quoted are the maximum such activity might take place.  Generally far less use below 250 feet is made of this airspace.

Operational Low Flying training down to 100 feet takes place across two other TTAs, one in Wales and another in northern Scotland.  Aircrew will continue to do all they can to minimise disturbance to those on the ground whether operational low flying training or routine low flying training is involved.
