The City of Carlisle Orchestra has had a turbulent history, amid a spiralling decline in the 1960's, where dwindling resources left the orchestra in dire straits. But the past two decades have seen the outfit grow from strength to strength, revived by music conductor John Hammond.

All ages

The orchestra presently boasts a membership of some 60 players in violin, cello, percussion, bass and horn players and is led by Catherine Swarbrick. The orchestra membership covers all ages, ranging from teens to the retired.

Whereas the majority of orchestras rely on funding from local arts councils, the city orchestra is a self-financing organisation, dependent on revenue from surplus ticket sales and membership fees, a percentage of which is allocated to charity.

Releasing various compilations of their work, including John Hammond's The Passion and a performance by the late Vivian Troon, they've played in a variety of churches across the north-west of England.

Enthusiasm

The primary objective of the orchestra is to provide regular rehearsals for aspiring musicians. Whilst drawing upon important works from a rich cultural heritage of established masters, their aim is to present a repertory of the symphony orchestra.

Celebrating their enthusiasm for both traditional and contemporary compositions, they often feature the works of composers such as; Debussy, Holst, Rossini, Dvorak, Bernstien, John Williams and even Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Generating three projects a year, the orchestra's eclectic collection of performances have seen them accompanied by many highly esteemed soloists, including Angela Sutton, Scott Bradley, Gordon Kydd and Ian Butterworth.

Endeavouring to encourage and nurture new talent, alongside their current expanse of players, the orchestra not only enable musicians the opportunity to develop their skills, but the chance to demonstrate their abilities amid a high calibre full-scale orchestra.

Joining

Though there is no age restriction to joining, it is expected members should possess grade five standard or above and share a mutual appreciation of the musical arts.
