FACT FILE

Gary Rhodes - Factfile

Gary's first attempt at cookery was a traditional lemon sponge made for his family when he was 14. It was the pleasure of that occasion that encouraged him to go on to catering college in Broadstairs, Kent.

He started working at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam as a junior chef but this job was called to a halt when he had to undergo brain surgery after being run down by a tram.

At just 26 years old, he was Head Chef at the Castle Hotel in Somerset where he retained the Michelin Star.

His first television appearance was presenting a live 10 minute slot in 1987.

In 1994 he was voted Television Food and Wine Personality of the Year by BBC Good Food Magazine and Sunday Express readers.

Gary won the Special Award at the Hotel & Caterer Magazine Awards (the catering industry's Oscars) in 1996 for his contribution to the British food industry.

He has made 9 television series for the BBC and has written over ten best-selling books, including the award-winning New British Classics.

His success includes four Michelin stars and the prestigious CATEY Special Award, the catering industry's equivalent of the Oscars.

For Gary Rhodes, good food is the perfect way to draw families and friends together.

In his new book, he does just that with a mouth-watering collection of recipes, which combine contemporary flavours with the very best from the past.

Gary looks at everything from appetisers and soups to desserts, reviving the long forgotten tradition of savouries along the way.

Delicious main dishes include:

  • Pan-fried Sea Bass with Blackberry Shallots & Creamy Hollandaise Sauce
  • Roast Salt & Peppered Duck Breast with Spicy Plums
  • Roast Rump of Lamb with Redcurrant Jelly & Lyonnaise Potatoes

And of course there are sensational ideas for puddings, including:

  • Bittersweet Strawberry Tart with Mascarpone Cheesecake Cream
  • Toasted Apricots on Warm Sugared Custard Toasts
  • Cream Tea Custards with Home-made Digestive Biscuits

Gary also shows us how to combine dishes to create the perfect menu, whether it be a quick informal meal for two or a sumptuous six course feast to impress friends.

Gary is seriously committed to creating excellent, top quality food that is incredibly enjoyable to eat and hopes to inspire others to cook through his books and television work.

Gary is also passionate about home cooking using the very best, fresh ingredients - preferably local produce - and is on a quest to get everyone cooking with confidence.
