A Klingon on board the Defiant makes use of a Bajoran orb of time to go a hundred years into the past. His mission is to change history - even if it means killing Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise. In pursuit of the vengeful Klingon an awestruck Away Team are forced to try to blend into the crew of the Enterprise at a moment of destiny as Lieutenant Uhura acquires a cute, cuddly, cooing creature known as a tribble.

From the phasers, transporters and warp engines of the original series to the plasma conduits and microfusion initiators of 24th century Starfleet, Star Trek writers have plundered all their best ideas from science. Having created four ever more advanced space-ships - where is there left for Star Trek to go?

When returning to Earth to stand trial, the crew of the Enterprise receive a distress signal urging them not to come closer. A mysterious probe is vaporising all the power on Earth and its people are in grave danger. Spock analyses the signal and discovers that the only creature that could answer the probe would be a humpback whale, but they've been extinct for centuries …..
