The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Seven
Radioactive Man

Bart becomes a superhero sidekick.

Episode 2F17
Written by John Swartzwelder
Directed by Susie Dietter
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Doris Grau, Maggie Roswell
Special guest voices: Phil Hartman (as Lionel Hutz), Mickey Rooney (as himself)

Premise: A Hollywood film crew decide to film a new Radioactive Man movie in Springfield. All they have to face is a greedy mayor, a reluctant child star and a once-only special effects shot involving flesh-stripping acid.

Features: Milhouse, Android's Dungeon Guy, Mayor Quimby, Chief Wiggum, Principal Skinner, Ms Krabappel, Miss Hoover, Hans Moleman, Nelson, Sherri and Terri, Martin Prince, Moe, Barney, Kent Brockman, Mr and Mrs van Houten, Lunchlady Doris, Grampa, Lionel Hutz, Krusty, Rainer Wolfcastle, Lenny, Carl, Apu, Mr Largo, Herman, Otto, Ralph, Snake.

Couch: A colour photocopy of the family slides on to the sofa.

Trivia:

  • Among the newsgroups that the Android's Dungeon Guy subscribes to are rec.arts.corewar, rec.org.mensa, alt.comics.radioactiveman, rec.arts.startrek.fandom, alt. binaries.pictures.erotica and alt.nerd.obsessive.
  • On sale in the comic store are copies of Bat Boy, Birdguy, Dogkid, Cat Girl, Snake Kid, Bat Chick, Treeman, Power Person, Man-Boy, Mr Hop, The Human Bee, Lava Lady, Nick, Star Dog, Iguana Girl, Radiation Dude and Mister Amazing.

Homage: The closing scenes of Hollywood are set to Lean on Me, a 1972 hit for Bill Withers. Radioactive Man seems closer to Batman than any other superhero, with several of the sixties Batman series gimmicks being used in this episode. The Scoutmaster closely resembles Paul Lynde, the voice of animated characters such as the Hooded Claw - nemesis of Penelope Pitstop. Radioactive Man and Fallout Boy are trapped at one point in Aquaworld, which looks very similar to Waterworid.

Moe's secrets: He played Smelly in the original L'il Rascals shorts.

Notes: A wonderful pastiche on the Tim Burton Batman movies, with Milhouse an obvious candidate for Fallout Boy. Our favourite heroes: Mr Hop and Iguana Girl.
