The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Five
Homer's Barbershop Quartet

Homer re-lives his doo-wap days.

Episode 9F21
Written by Jeff Martin
Directed by Mark Kiridand
Also starring: Pamela Hayden
Special guest voices: George Harrison (as himself), David Crosby (as himself) Additional vocals by The Dapper Dans (as the singing voices of the Be Sharps)

Premise: At Springfield's swap-meet, Bart discovers a record apparently made by Homer. Homer recalls his brief pop stardom as a member of barbershop quartet, the Be Sharps - a Grammy, a concealed marriage, a Japanese conceptual artist

Features: Mayor Quimby, Moe, Nelson, Milhouse, Flanders, Principal Skinner, Herman, Chief Wiggum, Apu, Barney, Grampa, Snake, Rev. Lovejoy, Groundskeeper Willie, Jasper, Captain McCallister, Lou and Eddie.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and explode.

  • At Moe's Cavern in 1985 there's a sign reading 'For a Good Time Call Edna Krabappel'.
  • The new name given to Apu by Nigel - Apu du Beaumarchais - means Apu of the Beautiful Market.

Homage: At the swap-meet, Moe is trying to make his oysters do impressions of comedienne Lucille Ball. Grampa and Jasper tune in by accident to a radio skit on the recently deceased (in 1985) right-winger Ray Cohn. There are many, many music references, mostly to the Beatles (Moe's 'Cavern', Barney's Japanese girlfriend, the rooftop concert, Homer's final remark 'I hope we passed the audition', which is from their movie Let It Be) and Elvis (he bought his mother a pink Cadillac, and the line 'I didn't pay any girls to scream' comes from one of his movies). Krusty's LP 'Swonderful, 'Smarvellous, 'SKrusty refers to an album with a similar title by Ray Conniff, while Melvin & the Squirrels are close relations of US kiddie cartoon pop group, Alvin & the Chipmunks. At the Grammy ceremony you can see Spinal Tap, Leon Kompowski from the episode , and somebody we think is MC Hammer.

Note for Brits: It's rather saddening to hear Dexy's Midnight Runners referred to in jest ('you haven't heard the last of them!') by Homer. Their only US hit was Come On Eileen in 1983. They fared rather better in the UK, of course.

Notes: This blasts the new season off to a fantastic start. Epic in its scale and its total disregard of the series' continuity - but who cares?
