The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Three
When Flanders Failed

Flanders exits left into the world of retail.

Episode 7F23
Written by Jon Vitti
Directed by Jim Reardon
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell, Tress MacNeille

Premise: Ned Flanders gives up his office job and opens up the Leftorium, a gift shop for southpaws (that's left-handed people) in Springfield Mall. But before long, the business fails and the Flanders lose everything. Only Homer can come to their rescue.

Features: The Flanders, Jasper, Jimbo Jones, Keamey, Dolph, Barney, Moe, Mr Burns, Smithers, Ms Krabappel, Apu, Otto, Lionel Hutz, Sideshow Mel, Kent Brockman, Principal Skinner, Dr Nick, Dr Marvin Monroe, Chief Wiggum, Helen Lovejoy, Lenny, Mayor Quimby, Eddie and Lou.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and break into an Egyptian dance.

Trivia:

  • The Springfield Martial Arts Academy is next door to Shakespeare's Fried Chicken.
  • Among the production credits on Itchy and Scratchy are Mobile Medical Unit Trauma Staff on Call, Arson Control, Bomb Squad, Fire Prevention Team, Catering for the Director (Fine French Cuisine), Catering for Staff (Krusty Burgers), Production Supervisors in Charge of Coffee, Miscellaneous Dirty Work Staff and, of course, Assistants to the Assistants.

Homage: Several sequences are lifted from It's a Wonderful Life.

Notes for the Uneducated: The Art of War by Sun Tzu is a genuine ancient text.

Itchy and Scratchy in: 0 Solo Meow.

Mmmm: ...barbecue.

Look out for: Mr Burns and his white cat.

Notes: A clever episode - very conveniently for Flanders, it seems that everyone except the Rev. Lovejoy, the Simpsons and Hans Moleman are left-handed.
