The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Two
Lisa's Substitute

A suave substitute schoolteacher sweeps Lisa off her feet.

Episode 7F19
Written by Jon Vitti
Directed by Rich Moore
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell, JoAnn Harris, Russi Taylor
Special guest voices: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel), Sam Etic (a pseudonym for Dustin Hoffman) (as Mr Bergstrom)

Premise: When Miss Hoover falls ill, Lisa's class gets a substitute teacher - rugged liberal Mr Bergstrom. Lisa's instantly smitten, and a special relationship develops. But what will happen when Mr Bergstrom has to go?

Features: Janey, Miss Hoover, Principal Skinner, Ralph, Sherri and Terri, Martin Prince, Wendell, Edna Krabappel, Lewis, Richard, Milhouse, Nelson Muntz.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - but the sofa's gone missing.

  • Other guests at The Happy Gypsy include I. Kamerman, J. Vitti and P. Hogan.

Homage: Ms Krabappel's attempted seduction of Mr Bergstrom is lifted from Dustin Hoffman's similar situation in The Graduate (Mike Nichols, 1967).

Notes for the Uneducated: Mr Bergstrom reads E. B. White's children's classic Charlotte's Web to Lisa's class.

Look out for: Ms Krabappel's sheer delight at the result of the school election.

Notes: Despite a scene-stealing performance from Ms Krabappel, this is Lisa's show. Mr Bergstrom's last message for Lisa is a delightful touch and adds the finishing touch to a wonderful episode.
