Happy birthday Bagpuss

Happy birthday Bagpuss

The pink and white cloth cat that Emily loved is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year.

Bagpuss was created in 1974 by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate, the people behind such TV hits as Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog and The Clangers.

Even though only thirteen episodes were made, characters such as the mice on the mouse organ, Professor Yaffle and Madeleine the rag doll have continued to delight children of all ages.

As well as reruns and DVD releases of the series Bagpuss has also found a new audience as a fashion accessory. T-shirts and bags featuring the character are popular with 16-24 year olds, according to the manufacturers Licensing By Design.

For more on the enduring appeal of Bagpuss read the BBCi News report via the link on the right.
