Maddy Magellen is a professional writer, who works as both an investigative journalist and an author of detective thrillers.
She soon discovers that Jonathan's talents can be useful to her, and calls on him to help solve seemingly impossible crimes.
Along the way Maddy also discovers she is deeply attracted to Jonathan, but he is suspicious of her motives and highly confused about his own feelings. It's not just a need for Jonathan's technical advice that motivates Maddy to get him involved in her investigations again and again.
Over the years there develops a mutual respect between the two. Maddy, once jealous of his ability to spot the significance of the slightest thing, comes to realise that he has his talents and she has hers. Unfortunately, her 'talent' is acting on her gut instinct, which often gets her into trouble.
Maddy never quite manages to get Jonathan to admit he has feelings for her. There is sexual tension, but it tends to be one-sided. They even slept together once, but it wasn't quite the moment she was hoping for. Such was their deep-rooted respect for each other that she found it was like sleeping with a mate.
Maddy is something of a slob, living in disorganised chaos and possessing a voracious appetite. She gets irritable and goes on the defensive if she is upset and she doesn't suffer fools gladly. Maddy also has a vicious sense of humour and often teases Jonathan to get her own way.
Maddy has recently been absent from Jonathan's life, away publicising her books in America.
