Classic TV | BBC 2
The opening night

When BBC Two launched on April 20th 1964, widespread power failure in Central London prevented the channel from broadcasting its intended schedule from BBC Television Centre.

Instead, the channel launched with a short news bulletin, read by reporter Gerald Priestland from the BBC's news studios in Alexandra Palace, followed by an evening of music and "BBC 2 Will Start Shortly" captions.

A tape of this recording was discovered in a dusty corner of BBC Research and Development's archive in February 2003.

The clip should play automatically after a few seconds. If not, click here.
