Peter Tobin Appeal - UPDATED FEBRUARY 2011
Following our appeal on 26 January 2011, Operation Anagram has identified the married couple who are documented as witnesses to the first marriage of Peter Tobin.
Detective Superintendent Swindle said:
"The response from the public has again been extremely positive, and through this appeal and other media appeals we received a large number of calls from people determined to help us piece together the missing gaps in Peter Tobin's life. We are delighted to have traced the couple named on Tobin's marriage certificate, and they will now form part of our enquiry. At this stage it is too early to say if they hold any information that could be of assistance, but time will tell."
Operation Anagram needs your help to trace three individuals who could help fill in some of the missing pieces of Tobin's life and help determine how many more victims may have suffered at his hands.
Mr and Mrs Hardy
The first two are a couple and were the only witnesses to Tobin's first marriage to Margaret Louise in Brighton on the 6th August 1969.
They are named on their marriage certificate as P. Hardy and P.G.S Hardy. The male witness could possibly be called Peter and is believed to have been in his 20s. He is described as having blonde, collar length hair and looking similar to the entertainer, Tommy Steele.
He is believed to have owned a car but the make and model are unknown. His wife had the initial P and is believed to have been a teenager at the time of the wedding, possibly only 16 or 17 years old and described as petite with short dark hair.
In 1969 the Hardys lived in Michael's Place in Brighton and Tobin and Margaret are believed to have stayed there on and off between March and July 1969.
The couple had a new-born baby that year, born between January and July 1969 who Margaret would occasionally babysit for. The sex of the child is unknown.
'Paul'
The third individual detectives want to trace is a man called Paul, who Tobin was friendly with in early 80s. It is believed that they met when Tobin worked at the Seafront Hotel, Marine Parade, Brighton.
Paul's surname was possibly Maguire or similar. He is described as white with dark hair and around 5'8" tall. He was originally from Liverpool and was aged around 18-20 years old in 1986.
He possibly owned a motorcycle and there is some suggestion that he complained of being rejected for entry from the Foreign Legion.
Paul is believed to have returned to Liverpool in early 1986 but returned to the hotel in Brighton later that same year.
Is this you? Or do you know these people?
These individuals are NOT in trouble with the police, but will have important information about Tobin's life. Minute pieces of information about Tobin have been vital to the success of Operation Anagram and identifying crime he has committed.
If you can help, or have any information about Tobin's life, no matter have small, please contact your local police force or the Operation Anagram team on operation.anagram@strathclyde.pnn.police.uk
Following our previous appeals, detectives have now traced one of Tobin's earliest known victims. The woman, who cannot be named, was sexually assaulted by Tobin in Glasgow in 1968. To watch her interview please click here.
In July one of Tobin's earliest known victims spoke on Crimewatch about her ordeal at his hands in 1968. Following our appeal literally hundreds of people contacted police with information about Tobin and the Driftwood Pub as well as potential new victims. Police are still keen to trace the couple seen in the pub who appeared to know Tobin.
One week after the July programme Sussex police conducted searches at two addresses used by Tobin in the 1980's. These searches were carried out as a result of four years work by the Anagram team and information given by members of the public following Crimewatch appeals. The searches failed to reveal any new evidence against Tobin however detectives are gratefully for being able to eliminate the properties as lines of enquiry.
On 28th July Tobin was questioned by Anagram officers in Edinburgh in relation to three serious sexual assaults from the 1960's as well as wider issues around Operation Anagram. Tobin refused to co-operate with police and continued to deny his involvement in all crimes, including those he has been convicted of.
On Tuesday 7th September members of Vicky Hamilton's family visited Operation Anagram Incident Room.
If you have any information about Tobin's life, however minor, please get in touch. Detectives particularly need to know where Tobin was in 1978.

Detectives have now traced and identified and located 'Bo' and 'Lesley', who are helping police with their enquiries. They have also located and identified Mad Mick, Becky and the Murphy family after appealing for them to come forward to help with Operation Anagram.
However, they still need anyone with information about Tobin's life, however minor, to get in touch and particularly need to know where Tobin was in 1978.

Police believe that Tobin may have been part of a Biker Gang called the Rising Sun in Brighton in the 80s. Police would like to speak to anyone who may have been connected to this group.
Detectives would like to trace a female known as 'Bo' whom Tobin appears to have known when he lived in Hampshire in the early nineties.
Police believe there was a girl aged 15/16 in the early eighties whose parents may have tried to legally prevent her from associating with Tobin. Police aren't sure of her name, but think it might be similar to Lesley. Lesley resided at a hotel on the seafront in Brighton around 1986. Shell be in her early to mid-40s now.
Police are keen to speak with anyone who has information regarding scrapyards which Tobin used or was connected with.
There are a number of pieces of women's jewellery recovered from Peter Tobin displayed on the site - police are still urgently trying to identity the owners. Take a look and see if you recognise any of the pieces.
Following calls about the pictures of military cap badges broadcast last month, police have received information that Tobin may have had links to the military and are keen to clarify this. Can you help with any more information?

Case background
Appeal for information: Detectives need your help to fill in the gaps of a timeline of Tobin's life back to the early 1960s. Any information - no matter how small or insignificant you may think it is - could be crucial to police and to families of victims seeking answers.
On the 16th December 2009, a jury took less than 15 minutes to find Peter Tobin guilty of the murder of Dinah McNicol. The 18 year old student was last seen in 1991 as she hitch-hiked home with a friend from a music festival in Hampshire. David Tremlett, her companion got out of the car at Junction 8 of the M25. It was the last time Dinah McNicol was seen alive.
This was Tobin's third conviction for murder in as many years. In 2007 he was found guilty of murdering 23 year old student Angelika Kluk and one year later of murdering fifteen year old Scottish school girl Vicky Hamilton who, like Dinah, had been missing since 1991.
Operation Anagram was set up at the time of the Angelika Kluk murder to investigate if Tobin was linked to other murders. Police strongly suspect that on top of the murders of Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol Tobin, he is responsible for more crimes.
