Why people create Easter gardens

On Good Friday, Christians celebrate an important religious day. They remember the death of Jesus Christ and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Children at the school have been learning about the Easter story and the events that are believed to have unfolded for Jesus and his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane.

On Easter Sunday, some Christians make Easter gardens, sing hymns at church and give chocolate eggs as gifts.

Gardens that tell a story

The children at Foleshill Church of England school worked hard to breathe new life into their special Easter gardens.

We went along to the school to photograph the gardens on display and to speak to some of the children about their work.

Each garden tells a story and the children have been very inventive with their use of house-hold materials to create their masterpieces.

How they were made

Most of the children got some help from their parents with making the gardens.

Annastassia, who has joined the school from Russia, said her grandma and her father helped her create her garden which is so detailed it even has a washing line complete with clothes and pegs! Her garden is pictured in the gallery.

Jonah said he had used a hanging basket which he decorated with wooden eggs from his Easter tree at home.

Katie's garden was made from an old celebrations chocolate box and she cut out the flowers from Easter wrapping paper and decorated the box with coloured feathers.

Ben's Easter garden had a scarecrow to scare birds away. He used metal, hay, felt, cardboard and tin foil for the swing, pond and plants in his garden.

To keep the flowers fresh, some of the children used upside-down washing-up pads for the base of the gardens.

Some of the older children planted seeds in the gardens and talked to me about the symbolism of the garden at Easter time.

You can see some of the gardens in the Easter gallery by clicking the images button above.
