Coventry University has chosen to mark the achievements football presenter Richard Keys in the latest batch of honourary degrees.

The Coventry kid, who was brought up in the Finham area of the City, has presented more live matches than any other football presenter in the country, recently passing the 1,000 mark.

The dedicated Sky Blues fan, who began his journalism career as a cub reporter in the Midlands, said: "'Surprise would not adequately sum up the way I felt when I received this news.

"What an honour! All the more special because it is being offered by Coventry University."

Mr Keys will be conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters (HonDLitt) for outstanding services to sport broadcasting.

As well as working for newspapers and agencies, he worked for eight years as the

Also set to be honoured are Martin Ritchley, chief executive of Coventry Building Society, John Towers, Chairman of MG Rover Group Ltd, Professor Brian Figaji, vice-chancellor of Peninsula Technikon in Cape
Town and President Tan Yew Sing from the university's international associate
