A new year and a new Ents team in the Warwick SU means the time finally comes when Coventry’s soul nation, R‘n’B massive and hip hop heads get a chance to see world-class acts on their doorstep.

Lucky Freshers will already be reeling from the combined attack of Scratch Perverts and UNKLE, but doors are open to the public at most of the Union’s themed nights.

Top of the bill is Mojo. Their season kicked off last week with New York’s legendary Godfather of Hip Hop, Afrika Bambaataa.

Head of the Zulu Nation, an organisation still as involved in community improvement as it was in revolutionising black global music, Bam is the original turntable freestyler.

UK appearances are rare, student gigs even rarer, so it's no surprise he went down a bomb. Follow the link on the left for the review..

Hot on his heels was Terri Walker live at Soul Nation, which they proudly call "the most important R ‘n’ B night in Midlands".

Then on Sunday the SU saw night sonics, lights and scratching from Ninja Tunes’ Hexstatic & Plastic Raygun at Ballistic.

One of the other highlights was Radio One’s Tim Westwood, kicking it on the SU dance floor. See the review linked on the left.

Following that, Rodney P MC’s for MJ Cole’s UK garage sound system at Remedy.

The Cooler chilled with Brazilian drum‘ n’ bass by Marky & XRS, MC’d by Stamina while Orishas will be bringing the noise with an Afro-Cuban thing.

The new ents team clearly have big plans, planning shows featuring Killer Kela, London Elektricity, Cash Money, Grand Wizard Theodore, and beyond to Dizzee Rascal and whoever.

If that don’t do ya, there’s the regular Soul Nation and occasional Krystal Vibes nights to check with.

Full details of all this plus all the rock and house nights can be found at the SU website (follow the link on the left) - or pick up their lowdown guide.

All these shows are £6 or less but non-students are advised to book in advance through the Warwick Arts Centre box office (024 7652 4524). Rock the house y’all!
