 | | Dexter, the hugely talented young DJ with the Australian dance mavericks, takes the stage in the left wing bar at the Collosseum in Coventry on Saturday, 23 November - and things are set to get very busy indeed.
Described as the most creative and original DJ in the world by the father of the art, Grandmaster Flash, Dexter is the four times Australian DJ champ, pioneering the art of giving music humour - often in a cartoon style.
He's also been championed by Public Enemy's Chuck D - but in the UK, Dexter is best known as a member of the avant garde Avalanches, who stunned several reviewers into inventing new superlatives with the superb Since I Left You.
Although released in Australia in 2000, it didn't make it big on these shores until last summer when the single of the same name - a gorgeous, summery fusion of delicious vocal and trippy backing - became a staple of every radio station's playlist.
The follow-up single, Frontier Psychiatrist featured Dexter taking bits from 37 spoken-world albums and fusing them together into a four minute cartoon-y homage to madness older people see in the young.
The Since I Left You album was, deservedly, crowned the best of the year in several polls and it received four ARIA awards and the band won Best Live Act at the Muzik Magazine and Q Awards and - to cap it all - they won Best Video for the single of the same name at the MTV Europe Awards.
In 2001 Dexter toured extensively with The Avalanches throughout the UK, Europe, United States and Japan as well as playing DJ sets at clubs around the world and key radio shows.
He also hosted a massively successful residency at the St Kilda Bowling Club and played sets at key product and film launches.
However, this is his first solo show in Coventry and it promises to be huge, so get there early. As usual, punters in the Left Wing get to stagger into the Groovy Garden next door and admire the collection of shiny disco balls!
