Coventry is known as the city in which the British motor industry was born.

The first factory to make motor cars for sale was founded in Coventry as was Daimler, the first successful car company.

Since then the city has had 138 vehicle manufacturers.

The museum holds the largest collection of British-built road vehicles in the world with over 230 cars and commercial vehicles, 250 cycles and 90 motorcycles.

You can see ThrustSSC at the museum, the first car to break the sound barrier and set a new land speed record at an amazing speed of 763,035 miles per hour.

 Royal car competition, design work
Design work for Royal cars by a Coventry University student
There is also an exhibition of vehicle designs for members of the world's royal families, which coincides with the Queen's Golden Jubilee year. These have been produced by 17 Coventry University students.

The ideas they submitted are very diverse and imaginative, including a desert 4x4 for an Arabian Prince, a Japanese Imperial Carriage and a two-seater for Prince Harry.

Visitors are also invited to design a car for royalty. The museum will be deciding the winner in September.
