A 35-strong group of third year media students from Coventry are off to Prague in February to make a short film which they intend to show at festivals around the country.

The group will be in the Czech capital for a week of intensive filming, which will see a production penned, casted and directed by themselves brought to life in broadcast quality.

For the students, it’s a first chance to be part of a crew working with professional actors.

Although when they started they had little working knowledge of their roles, they are now confident they can complete the ambitious project and boost their future careers in the process.

Not only have the students had to learn about various aspects of filmmaking, they also had to raise the cash to pay for the production.

A series of fundraising events, from movie nights to skittles and a fancy-dress backpacking event in supermarkets, has made the project possible.

Inspired by the spires

The group at work in the formative stages
When the group, called Praha Productions, devised the project, they set themselves three main goals:

• To produce a high quality, stylised, short film of ten minutes duration to be entered into film festivals

• To provide crew with essential work experience and industry knowledge

• To complete a professional film shot in an international and culturally diverse location.

The group decided to film in Prague, inspired by the history, architecture and folk tales of the beautiful city.

Also, Prague is known as the city of spires – an interesting comparison to Coventry, the city of three spires.

Work in progress

The next thing that had to be decided was the story and the group decided to pen a script based on the Czech folk tale, the Three Golden Hairs.

The group worked together to decide on who would work behind the scenes and what tasks they would undertake.

Russell Whitehead and Rebecca Hooper got to work on the script, which sees two travellers set an impossible task by a mysterious man, leading them on a surreal and magical quest through the city.

The crew will gain valuable industry experience
The cast, Simona Brhlikova, Mark Gibbs, Richard Michael-Morse and Robin Sampson, are professional actors who were recruited after a rigorous casting session.

When the film is complete, it will receive its premiere in Coventry before being offered to film festivals around the country.

Come back soon to see updates from Prague on the site plus the chance to see an excerpt from the completed movie later in the year.
