Professional artists who have been involved in the national project called Artist Access to Art Colleges Scheme (AA2A) are exhibiting their work together for the first time.

This unusual and eclectic exhibition of work by 11 professional artists is on at Coventry's Herbert Art Gallery and Museum from 5 December 2002 to 5 January 2003.

The AA2A project is part of a national scheme organised through the National Association for Fine Art Education and supported by the National Lottery, through the Arts Councils of England and Northern Ireland.

Coventry University's School of Art and Design was one of only 18 colleges and universities throughout England and Northern Ireland that was been successful in its application to run the scheme.

University access

The project at Coventry University gave experienced, professional artists the opportunity to develop their work.

They were able to use the School of Art and Design's facilities, including the studios, workshops, and computer facilities.

The scheme allowed students to work alongside the artists, too, providing them with valuable insights into art and craft professions.

Local artists

Since it started in 2000, the AA2A scheme at Coventry University has attracted many local artists, some of whom are already well-established professionals.

While a few of the artists in the exhibition are from as far afield as London, most of the artists are from Coventry, Leamington, Stratford and other surrounding areas, reflecting the talent on our doorsteps.

Eclectic exhibition

The exhibition includes drawings, prints, liquid emulsion photography, glass and metal sculpture, textile works, ceramics, paintings, digital imagery and more.

Larger-than-life heads, technical drawings, antique-style photographs and luscious textiles all sit side-by-side in this exciting collection.

This diversity reflects the range of facilities at the university and the broad expanse of artistic talent in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.
