The final Royal Show

Royal Show memories

The last ever Royal Show has closed in Warwickshire - listen to some of the stories of participants from recent years.

The much-loved annual farm event ran at Stoneleigh Park from 7-10 July (2009).

The Royal Agricultural Society of England (Rase) announced in April that the Warwickshire event was no longer financially viable meaning this year’s show, the 160th in all, was the final one.

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire broadcast live from Stoneleigh throughout the week and our reporter Moira Rawlings spoke with a number of characters who have been involved with the event over the years.

Click on the links below to listen to the agricultural tales.

John Hearth

The chief executive of the Royal Agricultural Society of England from 1972 to 1989, John Hearth, believes it was almost an accident that he got the job.

Beverley Satterthwaite

The manager of the Animal Welfare Centre at Warwickshire College's Moreton Morrell site, Beverley Satterthwaite, talks about livestock.

Maurice Lander

Chairman of the West Midlands Allotments Association, Maurice Lander, talks about growing your own.

Peter Heywood

Chief Poultry Steward, Peter Heywood, was at the first show held at Stoneleigh more than 40 years ago and talks about his cochin chickens.

Clive Joyce

Hive talkin' - Listen to Clive Joyce from the British Beekeepers Association.

Percy Dodd

Royal Show foreman, Percy Dodd, speaks about his feelings on the last ever Royal Show.

Mike Cotton

Royal Show steward, Mike Cotton, reminisces about his time at the event.

Annie Othen at The Royal Show

One of the most memorable moments of BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's time at the last Royal Show has to be Annie Othen performing artificial insemination on a Toggenburg goat.

You can listen again by clicking on the link below and Annie began by asking Christine Ball from the British Goat Society why the procedure is so important.

I was really very upset to hear about the closure of the Royal Show , i would attend regularly throughout the 70's as a child, and our school actually gave us "unofficial" time off to attend ! It really was a big day out, and as previously mentioned, had the regional news teams live from Stoneleigh !Fabulous ...... Free coffee and cakes and sandwiches at the major banks buldings (if you were a customer ) , royalty , red arows, parchute display teams ......... it was amazing ......You didn't necessarily go to see lot's of carttle ....it was ALOT more than that !!!!!!

I attended my first Royal Show with my Grandfather (Who was a farmer) when i was about ten, i am now just over 50. I have been to many since and think that the last show was one of the best in recent years. Its such a shame that no more will be held.

John Galilee
My memories of the Royal Show in the 1980s, unfortunately had nothing to do with agriculture. Both the BBC and Central TV had a major presence at the Show, with both Midlands Today and Central News broadcasting live each night. I used to run between the stands, collecting autographs and as much TV/radio merchandise I could fit into a free BBC In The Midlands carrier bag.

Miss Yvette M Boddy
My late mother (Audrey Boddy) who passed away nine years ago with Motor Neurone Disease, used to work at the Royal Show from 1979-February 1988. She had happy memories of the Royal Show, saw famous people etc. Great turn out.If she was alive today, she would recall happy memories and would be sad to see an end of an era.
