Coventry Market's roundabout

Coventry Market's roundabout

Memories of the market

We've been down to Coventry Market to meet the Stokes family who run its famous roundabout. It has been in their family for generations - even before the current market was built.

The roundabout could be described as the heart of Coventry Market. It currently sits in the centre of the building, turning practically non-stop throughout the day.

Most Coventry children, of a certain age, would remember visiting the market and asking to go on the roundabout - whether it was in the stagecoach, the bus, or the boat, there was something to spark your imagination.

The famous roundabout

The famous roundabout

Hannah Tobin from the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire website went down to the market to speak to Anthony and Rachel Stokes about the roundabout and its history.

Anthony and his wife took over the roundabout after his uncle retired - and now it is cared for by their daughter, Rachel.

You can listen the interviews with Anthony and Rachel - and hear about the original owners, Mr and Mrs Statham, by clicking on the link below:

A poem for the market:
It's pension day, on the bus I hop
Off to the market to shop 'til I drop
In and out the stalls, rushing round and round
Dodging shopping trollies and boxes on the ground
I've bought my fruit and veg, a nice piece of fish
A plug for the sink and a baking dish
Next on my list is a thermal vest
Then home on the bus for a well earned rest - Oh what a lucky pensioner I must be
Flashing the pass and travelling free

I worked as an apprentice at H.Crane radio, TV and musical instruments in Far Gosford street in the mid fifties and sixties. We had to repair the record player on the roundabout. We always said we were going to see 'Roundabout Joe', was that his name? I have no idea. But it always amused us to see the english penny taped to the pickup head of the player to stop it jumping up an down due to the vibration of the roundabout. One of the main reasons we had to go so often, to replace the pickup stylus which wore out so quickly. Happy days, lots of memories.
