The Beechings of Berkswell

Did you know that Dr Richard Beeching used to live in Warwickshire? BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Keith Wedgebury went along to the house in Berkswell to find out more...

Penny Stapleforth is the current resident of Tower House in Berkswell - but during the 1960's, it was the home of Dr Beeching and his wife.

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Keith Wedgebury interviewed Penny for our Golden Age of Steam project and found out more about the building's history.

Penny even tells of the time Dr Beeching's wife returned to visit the house and noticed they'd even kept the same bath!

Berkswell station used to be on the junction line that ran to Kenilworth. As Kenilworth was one of the stations that was closed by Beeching, that part of the line is no longer used.

However, the trackbed of the original line is apparently being turned into a greenway for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
