Band Of The Month
Drag Queen Bingo
Lucky for some...
Our Band of the Month for September is Nuneaton rockers Drag Queen Bingo.
Drag Queen Bingo:
Steve Long - Lead Vocals
Matt Green - Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals
Dan Joyce - Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals
Eddie Long - Bass Guitar
Sam Keen - Drums
The quintet – made up of Matt Green, Steve Long, Danny Joyce, Ed Long and Sam Keen – first came under BBC Coventry & Warwickshire’s radar at the Pinley Music Festival.
Their 60’s rock style immediately struck a chord and the McCartney-esque base lines were ringing through the rafters of the Golden Cross.
The band class their influences as very varied and include the New York Dolls, Dandy Warhols, 80’s Americana and Britpop.
Drag Queen Bingo formed in the summer of 2006 - as did the songwriting partnership of guitarist Matt and vocalist Steve.
Steve tells us: "Matt and I met about two-and-a-half years ago at gigs around Nuneaton and started talking about putting together a band. I'd just moved over from Hinckley and Matt introduced me to his long time friend Sam, who he went to school with.
"I was working as a trainee teacher when I met Dan. I'd somehow ended up helping a band of students rehearse some cover songs for their leaving assembly and after hearing Dan play we snapped him up as soon as he got his results and left school. We didn't really have a firm bassist in mind and we had a couple of people try out and even considered Matt playing bass at one point but my younger brother Ed was really keen and although he had never picked up an instrument in his life so we went for enthusiasm, and now he's probably the most consistent performer in the band! Shows you what you can do with a bit of focus!"
We also asked Steve about any memorable shows from the past couple of years. He told us about some his favourite 'Bingo' gigs:
"We've had quite a few memorable shows, one in Brighton earlier this year springs to mind. After a long drive down to Brighton Uni and many many beverages consumed, I think even the students might have been a bit shocked, and although none of the band actually remember playing the gig, we got a great reception afterwards so no harm no foul! The first time we played the Kasbah was a good night too because not only did we get to play in front of a lot of new people but for some reason we all just felt relaxed and something just clicked."
Drag Queen Bingo have spent the summer of 2008 in Brighton, recording their new EP, Lyrebird.
At the Pinley Music Festival
One of their stand-out tracks is Hammer My Condition Home, which heavily pulls in all of the band’s psychedelic 60’s influences to create a song filled with harmonies and guitars – and even a Hammond organ – which could possibly put the stamp on that classic rock sound.
And a statement from Steve about the new EP sums up the band's sound - good old fashioned rock and roll!
"It's an upbeat record that we hope's not trying to be cool or fashionable or cutting edge just some fine rock and roll that everyone can enjoy without getting too pretentious or analytical about!"
