Challenge of a lifetime

During August, Haroon Mota will be taking on the K2 challenge to raise money for charity.

Coventry's Haroon has been mountaineering for five years and has already climbed the main mountains of Great Britain.

He has also completed the 3 Peaks Challenge where he climbed Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales consecutively in under 24-hours.

As part of the K2 challenge, Haroon will have to treck up to ten hours a day for two weeks in order to reach the base camp of K2, an altitude of 18,000 feet.

K2 is the second highest mountain on earth and is part of the Himalayan range on the Pakistan and China border.

Haroon hopes to raise £10,000 for orphans worldwide, which is supported by the Islamic Relief's Orphans General Fund.

He is already halfway to reaching his goal, thanks to sponsors who have donated online and in person. Technology at Coventry University has also been helping with his training. Haroon said:

"I am really looking forward to it. It is a great opportunity for me to unwind all the stresses I have encountered over the past three years at university.

"At Coventry University, we have some hi-tech equipment in our labs which will allow me to exercise in simulated altitude."

Apart from the altitude sickness, Haroon is really looking forward to the expedition:

"Taking on the K2 challenge is a dream come true. It is supposed to be one of the best treks in the world, and helping orphans along the way is a great opportunity.

"My religion, Islam, promotes the practice of charity and encourages me to support orphans. This inspired me further so I took it upon myself to do a good deed by helping children in need."
