Lewis Garland

Band of the Month rebels

Our Band of the Month for June is Coventry quartet, Lewis Garland & The Kett Rebellion.

Lewis Garland & The Kett Rebellion:

Lewis Garland - Vocal, Guitar

Bradley Blackwell - Double Bass

Drew Coleman - Mandolin, Guitar, Concertina

Ben Wiffen - Percussion,  Backing Vocals

It's June, which means that summer is finally here. It also means that the festival season is fast approaching.

And probably the most famous festival - alongside the Godiva Festival! - is Glastonbury. Where is this going I hear you cry? Well, the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Band of the Month for June are due to play this annual west country festival.

Lewis Garland leads The Kett Rebellion, who are Bradley Blackwell, Drew Coleman, and Ben Wiffen. They have been together since 2006 and have already drawn a dedicated following and have supported the likes of Faustus, and local chart-toppers Nizlopi.

Clever and poetic

With clever and poetic lyrics, their live performances always promise to be fun and energetic - and that's just Lewis' dancing with his guitar!

Their music style has sometimes been described as medieval, but is it 21st Century medieval music?  Maybe they're modern medieval minstrels - if there is such as a thing?

If you have seen the band perform live, you will know that they can just set-up their instruments in the middle of an audience, play completely unplugged, and capture the eyes and ears of those surrounding them.

Fantasy Glastonbury

To get a glimpse into their musical influences and CD collections, we asked the band what their fantasy line-up for Glastonbury would be. There were some similarities - three of them would like to see Radiohead and Tom Waits - but there were also a few surprises.

Drew and Bradley

Drew and Bradley

Lewis would like to see Jeff Buckley, The Decemberists, Billy Bragg, and The Dirty Three - but he would also like Ozomatli to cheer things up a little!

Drew has a slight 1960's slant to his stage with artistes such as Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd and Bruce Springsteen (with the Seeger Sessions Band), while Bradley would like to see The White Stripes, Damien Rice, Led Zeppelin, and Nizlopi. I wonder if Nizlopi and Led Zeppelin would collaborate for this imaginary festival?!

Ben, on the other hand, would like to see Gorillaz and Portishead perform.

If you haven't got tickets for the Glastonbury Festival, be sure to catch these talented musicians at various venues across Coventry & Warwickshire throughout the summer.

Live in the studio

Lewis Garland & The Kett Rebellion came into our studios to record a session for BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Introducing. You can hear highlights from the interview - including a live performance of Roots - by clicking on the links below:
