Coventry's Kristy is our Band of the Month

Our Band of the Month... well... featured artist of the month, is Coventry’s very own Kristy Gallacher.

Whether you play in a local band or enjoy going to gigs in Coventry and Warwickshire, it’s safe to say you will have heard of Miss Gallacher. Not only is she a singer-songwriter in her own right, but she’s also known to organise the odd acoustic night and music festival as well.

Over the years, Kristy has been fortunate to support the likes of Glen Tilbrook from Squeeze, Nizlopi, and Nerina Pallot.

In addition to playing gigs and organising events, Kristy is currently studying for a music composition degree at Coventry University, and has also found time to record and release her debut album Emotional Gun.

"I played with an 8-piece band and played the new album in order from start to finish and we all just enjoyed it so much"

The album’s launch party took place on Saturday, 22 March at the Hope and Anchor pub in Coventry – and the place was packed.

“We were so pleased to see so many people there supporting local live music, was very busy indeed”, Kristy told us. “The supports (Al Britten, Ben Clempson and Lucy Anne sale) were all fantastic. I played with an 8-piece band and played the new album in order from start to finish and we all just enjoyed it so much. It was a lot of hard work but well worth it.”

The album features several musicians from the Coventry and Warwickshire music scene and help to make up the Kristy Gallacher Band. With the additional musicians behind her, the album has a full, electric sound.

When we asked Kristy about the production of Emotional Gun, she said: “The album has more of a band feel rather thank the solo acoustic guitar EPs I have released in the last few years. Lots of strings, keys and some brass. The musicians playing on it are now all members of the KGB (Kristy Gallacher Band). It was produced by Clive Layton, a fantastic Coventry musician and he also plays bass on the album.”

If you’re a band or solo artist and fancy getting up and playing to an audience, an open-mic night is perhaps the perfect place to begin – and Kristy is the organiser of two acoustic nights, which include open-mic slots.

One of the sessions is at the Hope and Anchor in Coventry (every Friday), and also at the Royal Oak in Kenilworth, on the last Sunday of the month. Both start at 8:30pm and are completely free.

And don’t worry, whether you play the trumpet, guitar, or accordion – all styles are welcome.
