On Tuesday, 4 November we premiered our musical extravaganza which you can watch by clicking on the link below:

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire is passionate about where we live, and loves to find creative ways of putting our city and county on the map.

Coventry Market - The Musical! premiere

In Coventry Market - The Musical! we asked customers, traders and Coventry people to swap apples for acting and sausages for singing in a five-minute film celebrating the iconic institution at the heart of our city. 150 people with a whole host of talents showed up to show off at our auditions held at the market.

Singers, dancers, jugglers or recorder players – all had a true story to tell, many of which form the basis of the musical’s plot.

Bringing People Together

The film is musical proof of how the market brings people together, featuring performers of all ages, from 6 to 88! Let us introduce you to Con, the maintenance worker, who’s been at the market 47 years; Reginald and Faith from Zimbabwe, who duet about the haven they’ve found in Coventry; Reece - the teenage opera singer; Eric - the national pitching champion; And Richard - the man who found love on the rug stall.

Composer and filmmaker Benjamin Till has woven their stories into this five-minute musical bonanza celebrating the place and people he calls "the nicest in the world". It pays tribute to Coventry Market’s history and the hustle and bustle of everyday life there. No professional performers are involved - on centre stage are 123 ordinary people, celebrating some extraordinary achievements.

Meet the Maestro

It’s not the first time composer Benjamin Till has worked with community groups to come up with entirely original musical films. His work so far includes Hampstead Heath the Musical and the recent documentary A1, which featured on Channel 4's Generation Next/First Cut series. He also contributed to the film 28 Weeks Later.

But Coventry Market - The Musical! is special for Benjamin as he returns to the city where his mum grew up, to tell the story of traders like his grandfather, who owned Garners the Butchers in Spon End.
