Horace Panter & Roddy Byers - By Pete Chambers

Horace Panter & Roddy Byers

A Specials Brew

Local music writer Pete Chambers, enjoyed a special night of music.

Special Brew have really been the torchbearers for Two Tone in this city ever since The Specials ‘left the building’.

Through their history they have shared the stage with many guests that helped put Coventry on the map first time around. For Special Brew never mimic the legends they immortalise. They simply do it their way, and their huge fan base is testament to the fact of ‘just how right they have got it’.

"It would be easy to get carried away just for the fact that this was the first time three Specials had performed together in many years"

On Saturday night at the Jaguar Sports Club in Coventry, Special Brew were playing for charity as were support Jam-tribute act Jam DRC, all organised by The All or Nothing Scooter Club in aid of Myton Hospice. Word on the street was that two former Specials would be joining the lads on stage.

As it happened this was wrong, no, make that three former Specials!

Roddy and Horace got up and took the 750 strong audience back twenty odd years with Concrete Jungle, Rat Race, Nite Club, Hey Little Rich and Little Bitch. Then they were joined by Lynal Golding for Enjoy yourself and A Message To You Rudy.

It would be easy to get carried away just for the fact that this was the first time three Specials had performed together in many years. The fact was, it all sounded so very good, and the smiles all round confirmed that. To cap it all £5.000 was raised for Myton Hospice.

Special Brew have a Two tone CV that no-one can touch, even the original bands could never boast of such guest artists. This was a tribute not just to Two Tone but to one of the Cities finest bands, keeping it real and keeping Coventry history alive! Now if they could just get seven former Specials to join them on stage!!
