As the Coventry music scene thrives, there is one event not to be missed. I took a trip to the recently extended Tin Angel on Spon Street in the city centre on Sunday, 17 December to discover exactly how their open mic night has gained such a dedicated following. A Sunday night at the Tin has never failed to impress. On my recent visit I was delighted to discover that the venue had been extended, while maintaining its cosy atmosphere. The combination of both regular artists together with fresh new sounds and faces means you always feel welcome, but you can also expect new things each week. I was blown away by a fusion of sounds including Steve Richards on guitar and lead vocals, Karen Williams on backing vocals, Neil Heath on bass and Dave Wainwright (Bongo Dave) on… bongos! They created a colossal sound, captivating the entire crowd with their rendition of The Stones’ Paint It Black. As the night progressed there were some amazing performances from regulars such as the evening’s host, Johnny Nicholds. Johnny is not only a great host but also possesses a rare talent which I look forward to hearing each time I visit. His upbeat strumming together with funny, and exceptionally clever, lyrics never fails to leave toes tapping. Other outstanding performances included the unique sound of Kit. Her distinct voice and the edginess of her guitar form a beautifully unique sound. As the evening came to an end there was one artist whose performance excelled in depth and feeling. Having dedicated the song to her son who is currently suffering from a severe addiction, Andrea O’Brien proceeded to conquer the entire audience with Wishing Well. Heartfelt lyrics and a lingering melody allowed Andrea to hold the entire room captive. Over the past five years the Tin Angel has been welcoming new artists to the stage and creating the perfect atmosphere for anyone who loves to play music, or just loves to listen. It’s the combination of a cool, kooky venue and excellent music that has gained the Tin Angel a “cult like following” (so says Johnny - open mic organiser and host). For a good atmosphere and music alike, this is one not to be missed out on. If you’re looking for live entertainment and fantastic vibes the Tin Angel is the place you need to be. |
