Malta international Michael Mifsud put the Sky Blues ahead in the 40th minute with a left-footed strike from the left side of the area. Jay Tabb extended the City lead when he broke into the box to finish Kevin Thornton's through ball. Burnley piled on the pressure in the second half and Paul McVeigh grabbed a consolation goal with a cool finish. City defender Ben Turner was sent-off somewhat harshly for his challenge on Kevin Phillips just before the interval, but only after Paul Robinson had given the visitors the lead. Coventry boss Iain Dowie was banished to the stands by referee Chris Foy in the second half, with the Baggie's forward Diomansy Kamara also seeing red close to the end of the match. Michael Mifsud scored the visitors' goal in-between strikes from Marcus Tudgay and Steven Maclean. City hit the post twice in the dying minutes, but despite not managing to level the game, results elsewhere ensured the Sky Blues safety from relegation.
