Rugby Cement works

Rugby's blot on the landscape?

A new TV series has voted Rugby Cement works as one of 12 buildings across the UK that should be bulldozed. But is it really that bad...?

Rugby Cement works has been voted one of the worst buildings in the UK.

The building came fifth in a Channel 4 poll for the programme Demolition, to find which building the public wanted to see reduced to rubble.

Cumbernauld shopping centre in Scotland was the judged to be the worst building in the UK, but the cement works in Rugby weren't far behind.

The Rugby Cement works is located on the Western side of the town and makes cement from the local limestone.

Cement was first manufactured in Rugby in the 1820s. In the mid-90's the current works were constructed in a £200m development - they are now one of the largest in Europe.

George Ferguson, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, is one of the people behind the TV programme - He said "People decided, not just the people of Rugby, but people who passed it - that it is one of the brutes of Britain."

The owners of the building Cemax, said in a statement:

"The design, materials and colour were carefully considered to minimise visibility. The plant has been part of the local community since 1865, we want it to remain so"

Have your say

Is Rugby Cement works all that bad or does it put the town on the map? And are there any other buildings in Coventry and Warwickshire that you think should be bulldozed.

Have Your Say

Does Rugby Cement works deserve the bulldozer? Are there any other buildings in Coventry & Warwickshire that you would like to see demolished?

I love this complex of buildings and I was shocked that anyone think it so ugly. I have past it many times in the last twenty years and always look out for it. It is a fine example of industrial architecture, a symphony of greys on a dull day and a stunning display of tonal contrasts on a sunny. I love the contrasts between the elaborate areas of pipework and ducting against the minimal flat planes of the larger wall surfaces. I past it today and resolved that this year would finally be the one when I managed to make a day trip to draw and photograph the works. Look at the works of the American artists Sheeler and Demuth if you don't believe industrial architecture can be a thing of beauty.

i think as long as its not burning rubber or polluting and hence creating local wealth, it should remain.

Steve in New Bilton
Roll on Easter shut down a week when the folk of Rugby can breath fresh air!

Helena
I live in Bilton, and we're lucky to live at the bottom of a hill where it's screened from view, but it sure is ugly, and our proximity to it and the view will definitely be a consideration when we move house.

The ugly building has been there since the late 1800's. How long have all the moaners been here??? If you dont like it and believe the the rubbish you hear about the pollution, dont live near it. The ugly building provides over 700 jobs locally and puts over £25,000,000 into the local economy. Who will replace that when it is gone???

dot
again I say paint it sky blue with white clouds and it may disguise it a little but nothing will stop the pollution it throws out.

I live near that cement works and I wish they could demolish it. It is the dirtiest horriblest thing in the country

ben
it is a real orfull building nock it down

pauline
Yes, it is the ugliest building ever and should be removed.

Lilian
It is far worse than they say. The deadly cocktail of emissions including many cancer-causing toxins are drifted onto the town because of the location to the west. There are so many people affected, children wheezing and on inhalers, cars and windows frequently covered in dust and chemicals like arsenic and mercury vapourised onto us. It is extremely bad and you never see a cement plant actually in a town, a smake-free zone, and upwind of a town so that all the pollution blows onto local people and the plume grounds on us. The EA admit it and seem not to care as they are the permitters of industry. What price a child's life? In Rugby, nothing is the price!

Jake Rankine
It is awfull, and looks more like NASA than a cement plant.

K Monk
It *is* an eyesore. It stands out on the skyline from many miles away. Even worse is the pollution it drops, despite the so-called eveidence in reports. When you live in the area, you see the fall-out!

harby garchay
How about the old cov stadium

I find it hard to believe that the Rugby cement works is really that much of an offensive part of the landscape when compared with other similar buildings up and down the country. There are far more ugly sights I see when travelling from London to Rugby and further north, and some of those are of far less use than a cement works. In fact I'd rate the current crop of bland housing developments all over Brownsover as being more offensive to the eye over the cement works any day.

steve
in the heydays of cb radio the lorry side of Rugby Cement was known as the THE BIG CHIMNEY squadron ......i wonder why... because all cement works have big have tall chimneys !!!! as long as people need jobs lets hope that the big chimney remains

TIM SANSAM
we live in long lawford and yes it should be screened in some way.

Fliss
Who cares what it looks like?! I certainly dont! its not there to look pretty, its there to make cement!

BOB BONES
the whole of rugby is a dump they should knock this down and carry on with the rest of the town

P Payne
Yes it is an blot on the landscape
