Leap the Barriers is a disability in sport awareness day that the university will be holding on Monday, 3 October.

Organised by the Students’ Union and University Sports Centre, it’s hoped the free event will encourage both students and local people to try out a whole host of different sports.

"We have identified low participation rates by students with impairments in our clubs and societies."
Philippa Gerrard, Students' Union

From 10am – 2pm people in the city centre will get a chance to try their hand at sports like wheelchair basketball and volleyball.

Coventry Crusaders’ wheelchair basketball team, Warwick Deaf Volleyball Club, British Blind Sport, Coventry City Council, Greater Warwickshire Sport and the English Federation of Disability Sport will lend their support to the initiative.

Philippa Gerrard is from the Students’ Union and has helped to organise the programme of sports for the day and she pointed out the reasons behind such an event.

Philippa said: “Within the Students’ Union we have identified low participation rates by students with impairments in our clubs and societies. The aim of this event is to not only to encourage participation, but also to raise awareness of the needs of disabled students within our clubs and societies.

“The event is completely free and open to all local people to get involved. We will also have resource packs for people to take away which will have information on local clubs in the area”.

The disability in sport awareness day takes place at Coventry University Sport Centre on Whitefriars street with displays held in University Square during the day.
